Young People We Care (YPWC) is looking for a responsible and motivated person intern/volunteer. The intern/volunteer will responsible for the overall coordination of YPWC’s role in the Road to Rio+20 project which is being implemented by Peace Child International with its regional partners (For more information Road to Rio+20  visit: www.road2rio.wordpress.com ) . The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of YPWC and the Road to Rio+20 Project Manager at Peace Child International.

YPWC is a registered youth-led and youth-focused organization that is headquartered in Ghana. The organization is operated by a combination of young people (aged 10 to 35 years) and adult allies working on youth and development related issues worldwide. The mission of YPWC is: to educate and inform youth on global issues; inspire them to take action; encourage youth participation in global issues; identify and build sustainable partnerships aimed at youth development; and provide young people with the tools and resources required for effective action.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone to gain experience in coordinating regional events, promoting and recruiting young people from West and Central Africa to take part in Road to Rio+20 activities. It is therefore essential that the coordinator is informed and motivated in this field.

The YPWC office is run by about 6-15 young people from all around the world. The staff and volunteers live and work together in a communal atmosphere. The successful applicant should look forward to living in a diverse environment. Willingness to work as part of a team and adaptability are prerequisites. A strong sense of responsibility is also required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a database of possible funders and write fundraising letters;
  • Serve as a liaison between Peace Child International, government, development agencies and the media;
  • Assist in the coordination of logistics for a conference of 120 youth participants including government and youth development stakeholders. (This may include venue selection, venue set-up, volunteer coordination, food/drink purchase and planning, transportation issues and/or schedule creation.)
  • Create and send promotional reminders and invitations to youth organizations, attendees and guest speakers via email or postal mail
  • Assist in developing packs and information Road to Rio+20 Africa Regional event in Ghana for all reading levels
  • Develop and facilitate partnership with government, development agencies and the media;
  • Initiate ideas for fundraising/marketing of Road to Rio+20 Africa Regional event in Ghana;
  • Must be ready to travel and represent YPWC within Ghana or abroad as required for meetings, etc;
  • Work on other related activities as will be directed by the Executive Director.

Duty Post, Duration and Fee

The job offer will be based in Kumasi, Ghana. The position will last for a year starting on 7th February 2011 with a possibility of an extension. This position is open to both Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians alike. The successful candidate will be appointed on a full-time volunteer placement. All food, accommodation and domestic travel expenses related to the project will be provided plus a small monthly stipend.

For the 2nd time, YPWC will serve as the Regional Partner for Youth ServiceAmerica in the coordination of 2011 Global Youth Service Day in West and Central Africa. We are looking for 2 – 3 responsible and motivated volunteers/interns to assist with promoting and coordinating GYSD in our region, mobilizing partner organizations and Country Partners in West and Central Africa, working with media and governmental officials, tracking projects, and assisting with grant reviews and translations. These positions will last from 2 - 4 months with a possibility of extension.

YPWC is a registered youth-led and youth-focused organization that is headquartered in Ghana. The organization is operated by a combination of young people (aged 10 to 35 years) and adult allies working on youth and development related issues worldwide. The mission of YPWC is: to educate and inform youth on global issues; inspire them to take action; encourage youth participation in global issues; identify and build sustainable partnerships aimed at youth development; and provide young people with the tools and resources required for effective action.

The YPWC office is run by about 6-15 young people from all around the world. The interns and volunteers live and work together in a communal atmosphere. The successful applicants should look forward to living in a diverse environment. Willingness to work as part of a team and adaptability are prerequisites. These positions are voluntary and unpaid. Though YPWC will assist successful candidates in finding accommodation, volunteers will bear the cost of their own living. However, all GYSD cost-related activities will be covered by YPWC.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote GYSD within the YPWC and additional youth networks
  • Support youth in designing their local communities service projects where needed
  • Assist in the coordination of logistics for a conference of 120 youth participants including government and youth development stakeholders. (This may include venue selection, venue set-up, volunteer coordination, food/drink purchase and planning, transportation issues and/or schedule creation.)
  • Create and send promotional reminders and invitations to youth organizations, attendees and guest speakers via email or postal mail
  • Assist in the production of event materials that are comprehensible for all reading levels
  • Develop a means of evaluation with the assistance of YPWC staff (i.e. questionnaire, small post-event focus groups or one-on-one interviews with a selected group of participants)
  • Implement evaluation tool and compile evaluation results
  • Other duties as assigned by Global Youth Service Day Project Manager.

The mission of YPWC is: to educate and inform youth on global issues; inspire them to take action; encourage youth participation in global issues; identify and build sustainable partnerships aimed at youth development; and provide young people with the tools and resources required for effective action.

The successful applicants for development officer position should look forward to living in a diverse environment. Willingness to work as part of a team and adaptability are prerequisites. This position is voluntary and unpaid however YPWC will provide accommodation and food. A strong sense of responsibility is also required.

General Functions:

  • Maintain a database of possible funders and write fundraising letters;
  • Develop and facilitate partnership with government and development agencies;
  • Develop concept notes and proposals;
  • Initiate ideas for fundraising/marketing;
  • Develop exciting and youth-friendly programs and activities that fall in line with topical development issues and current programs which are related to areas such as international migration, climate change,etc;
  • Coordinate support and inputs for new publications, educational programs, small youth-led development projects;
  • Contribute articles to newsletters and the website;
  • Must be ready to travel and represent YPWC within Ghana or abroad as required for meetings, research, etc;
  • Work on other related activities as will be directed.

Desirable Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written skills.
  • Ability to organize and manage data efficiently and to identify special problems and opportunities;
  • The intern must be self-motivated with an ability to take initiative, prioritize duties, and work independently while functioning as a member of a team;
  • Excellent organizational and clerical skills and the capacity to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Good computer skills including internet, Microsoft Word and knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint
  • Interest in and commitment to sustainable development and youth leadership
  • Attention to detail.
  • Patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor are essential.

YPWC seeks motivated, creative and active internet users to join our team of young Virtual Volunteers!

The Online Content and Resource Editor will work alongside YPWC staff to develop our online content pages and enhance the overall online community experience.

YPWC is a registered youth-led and youth-focused organization that is headquartered in Ghana, with additional satellite offices in the United Kingdom and Canada. The mission of YPWC is: to educate and inform youth on global issues; inspire them to take action; encourage youth participation in global issues; identify and build sustainable partnerships aimed at youth development; and provide young people with the tools and resources required for effective action.

The YPWC office is run by 6-15 young people aged 10 to 35 years, from around the world. Our Virtual Volunteers are a vital part of the organization, and without their support the site would not remain updated with the latest development issues and opportunities for youth. Being one of the recipients of the 2009 UN Online Volunteering award (See: http://www.ypwc.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=141) shows how useful virtual volunteers are to YPWC.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Working alongside staff in developing and enhancing our member experience;
  • Lead a team of resource editors to check quality control for YPWC’s website and publications;
  • Organize and lead trainings for the Online Content and Resources Editorial team;
  • Suggest recommended content for newsletters and the issues teams;
  • Ensure that relevant Events, Opportunities, Toolkits are highlighted and reported to webmaster and newsletter team members;
  • Respectfully representing YPWC;
  • Respond to comments and engage users on YPWC’s social networking communities (Facebook, Twitter, TakingITGlobal and YouTube)
  • Write and/or ghost write on blogs, twitters, etc.
  • Work on additional assignments provided by the Online Community Coordinator
  • Additional related tasks as necessary.

 

Desirable Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong written communication and presentation skills;
  • Natural curiosity and interest in using Internet technology for social change;
  • Ability to multi-task and collaborate with other online users;
  • Ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision
  • Interest in at least one Global Issue
  • Have regular and reliable access to the Internet
  • Knowledge of social networking communities


Additional Valued Skills:

  • Bilingual or multilingual an asset;
  • Previous participation in youth or student organizations, or other volunteer roles;
  • Experience with the media, including online publishing and communities;
  • Strong knowledge and curiosity of current affairs, international issues, human rights and development, with particular interests in youth engagement and information and communications technologies;
  • Ability to work in collaborative teams – particularly in a virtual context;
  • Sense of humor and diplomacy;
  • Formal education or relevant experience is considered an asset.

•    Creation/Collection of educational materials, games and activities to be shared with participants

•    Regularly update the YPWC website

•    Familiarity with Joomla and/or Content Management Systems
•    CiviCRM skills a plus
•    PHP and MySQL skills
•    Database hacking
•    Communication/user experience a plus


Responsibilities:

•    Respond to comments and engage users on YPWC’s social networking communities (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and TakingITGlobal)
•    Write and/or ghost write on blogs, twitters, etc.
•    Work on additional assignments provided by the Online Community Coordinator

•    Recruitment of youth leaders to direct clubs within specific schools
•    Development of curriculum for MDG clubs
•    Assisting youth leaders to form clubs and organize regular meetings and activities
•    Assistance with MDG club activity days
•    Proposal writing/grant seeking activities related to funding of long-term MDG club activities

Desired skills/interests include:

•    Highly skilled in writing/composition
•    Interest in policy/advocacy and/or outreach

•    Assist in the production of materials for the events

•    Assist Chief Finance Officer with YPWC program budgets
•    Assist Chief Finance Officer with financial policies and procedures
•    Assist Chief Finance Officer with vendor communications and filing

Responsibilities:

•    Assist the Executive Director in implementing YPWC action plans, and in improving YPWC systems, policies, procedures, infrastructure, and structures so as to enable YPWC accomplish its mission and objectives.
•    Assist in the day to day administration and supervising of Volunteers and Interns.
•    Responsible for administrative documentation and developing/maintaining partnership with existing YPWC’s stakeholders.
•    Act as the organizations first point of contact in the office and through the internet.
•    Maintain accurate and up to date records and filing system of all work undertaken, keep abreast of all developing legislation best policy and practice
•    Maintain confidentiality of personal information on projects and users in addition to adhering to YPWC’s policy and procedures.

Desirable Skills:

•    Some office experience, computer literacy (use of MS word, Excel, Database, PDF, and outlook amongst others)
•    Organization, ability to self-manage, good verbal and written communication skill, perseverance, customer care, and interest in the work of YPWC.

YPWC is working in partnership with Peace Child International, UK to promote the ideals of sustainable development among young people in Ghana. Volunteers will work to under the objective of empowering young people to be the change and educate their peers or younger pupils on the issue of sustainability.

Responsibilities:

•    Recruitment of youth to become become a Be the Change! Challenge Ambassador within specific schools
•    Assist Be the Change! Challenge Ambassadors in developing learning modules
•    Provide on- going advisory sessions to help them to deliver and report on their workshops.
•    Assisting youth leaders to form clubs and organize regular meetings and activities
•    Proposal writing/grant seeking activities related to funding of long-term  sustainable development activities

Desired skills/interests include:

•    Highly skilled in writing/composition
•    Interest in policy/advocacy and/or outreach and in working with young people
•    Excellent communication skills
•    Knowledge of  sustainable development
•    Patience and flexibility will be a valuable asset


TIME COMMITMENT:  Must be available for two weeks or more. Hours are flexible, up to 30 hours per week and more if completing credit for undergraduate or graduate courses.

REQUIREMENTS:  High school students, college students and college graduates are welcome; Self-motivated; interest in community service and youth involvement; excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent computer skills; ability to manage several tasks at one time; and a sense of humor.

COMPENSATION:  Unpaid. Credit hours can be provided if applicable. This experience looks good on a CV. Colleges and employers welcome these key skills A YPWC and a Peace Child Ambassador certificate will be provided where applicable.
